ImjaTse peak is also called Island Peak (6160 m) (named by Eric Shipton’s team in 1953). It looks like an island in a sea of ice, with an impressive, highly glaciated west face that rises from the Lhotse Glacier. However, the magnificent views from the summit are certainly a fitting reward for the climber’s efforts.
In 1953 a British team first summited Island Peak as preparation for climbing Mount Everest. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the members of the team who successfully ascended it. In addition to the actual climb, the trek involves “the grand tour” of the famous Khumbu valley. The gradual climb to the Khumbu valley helps to further acclimatize and acquaint yourself with classic views. While on the trip one can see beautiful, multicolored prayer flags, prayer wheels and intricately carved Mani stones line every hilltop, rock wall and trailside singing prayers to the mountain gods.
Island Peak is the final goal of the trip. The summit day on Island Peak involves crossing a crevasses formed glacier by using a climbing rope, a jumar to ascend a fixed route, fixing some ladders across crevasses, and then a descender to come back down again and negotiating a narrow exposed ridge to the summit.
Climbing Island Peak is physically demanding than technically. This peak is suitable for those who wish to gain experience in mountain expedition as well as know much about extensive use of gears such as ladders, jumar, ropes, and traversing through the snowy terrain.
