Everest Base Camp is a must-explore- destination for those who want to set foot at the base of Mount Everest (8,848m), the world’s highest peak. The journey begins with a 40- minute scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, then a hike to Phakding. Beyond Phakding we follow the classic path which is quite flat. After crossing two suspension bridges we gently walk straight uphill through plenty of mani stones, Sherpa settlements, cultivated fields, rhododendron forests Dudh Koshi valley, Sagarmatha National Park, Buddhist monasteries and finally reach Namche Bazaar at an elevation of 3440 m. Namche Bazaar is considered to be the best place to relax and heading to the Khumbu region. At Namche Bazaar we explore the largest Sherpa settlements, meet the local people and enjoy hospitality. Here we visit a popular trading center, visitor’s centre & Sherpa museum.
After spending two nights at Namche for acclimatizing and exploring around, we head to Everest Base Camp. Today our ascent is a bit tough. We walk along the side of the mountain, and gently descend downhill to the river. After crossing a suspension bridge, we walk straight uphill until we reach Tengboche Monastery set against the backdrop of Mt Ama Dablam. After Tengboche we walk a steep downhill to Pangboche, and then keep going to Dingboche. Leaving Dingboche we traverse through a relatively flat terrain and then gently ascend through a valley, and walk down to the river and reach Dhugla (also called Thukla). Here after lunch you can make a short and steep uphill climb up to the memorials for those who have died on Everest. From the top you can enjoy the best view of the mountains with prayer flags fluttering in the air.
Then, the next morning we further continue our relatively gradual ascent up to Lobuche. From Louche we trek through a beautiful valley with a gradual ascent to Gorak Shep where we take lunch and head towards EBC. This is the tough bit of trail, with plenty of ups and downs. It takes about two hours to reach EBC, and a little less to get back. At the end trekkers can fulfill their long-cherished dream being at the Everest Base Camp. Next day we ascend to the black rock called Kala Patthar (5545 m) to enjoy spectacular views of the south-west face of Mt Everest, Icefall and surrounding snow-capped peaks. Then we walk all the way down to Lukla following the same previous route after spending a few days along the route at different places.
This trek requires you to be physically fit but not necessary to be an experienced trekker. March to May (spring season) and Sept to Dec (autumn season) is the best season for EBC and other treks in Nepal.
