Mardi Himal Trek is one of the most exotic and least explored treks in the Annapurna region that offers immense opportunity to venture into the deep forests and the high alpine pastures that flank the southern Annapurna ranges. This trek can be the best option for those who are looking for a new trekking route. The trails that we follow are not frequently used by hikers, and sometimes it is hard to identify. Sometimes we encounter shepherds and pilgrims passing by.
The trek also provides outstanding mountain views, being away from the tea-house trails. On the last day of the trek, we visit some villages and experience the traditional charm of the village people. The Mardi Himal trek literally adds a lifetime adventure thrill to trekking enthusiasts. The entire area is quite steep-sided and heavily wooded with bamboo and rhododendron. Above the forest, we find high-altitude alpine pastures which offer grazing for cattle and a dwelling place for undisturbed wildlife.
Though the Mardi Himal trekking route officially opened recently, most of the travelers visiting Nepal have shown keen interest to do this trek. This trek can be completed within 9–10 days. We begin this trek after a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara and take a local land transport to Kande, which is the trek starting point. From Kande, we follow a beautiful trail that takes us to the culturally rich villages of the Gurung ethnic community.
In spring, we can enjoy beautiful sights of rhododendrons that bloom in red color. We spend a night at a forest camp, low camp, and high camp, from where we will enjoy the best glimpse of sunrise and sunset views of Mt. Mardi Himal, Mt. Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and other surrounding peaks. We explore the western side of the Mardi Himal base camp, located at an elevation of, 4500 m. After exploration, we return to Pokhara and then to Kathmandu, and finally concludes the Mardi Himal trek.
